Backroads Danube Bicycle Trip

Herrenchiemsee, Germany

After traveling through Poland, I used trains to get to Traunstein, Germany which is the starting point for the Backroads Germany-Austria Bicycle Trip. The group included 15 women and 10 men. As with all Backroads solo camping bicycle trips, we were paired up two per tent (same gender).

The first day was a bike ride around Lake Chiemsee with a tour of Herrenchiemsee which is the castle built by King Ludwig II in the style of Versailles.

The most interesting rooms are the unfinished ones because one can observe the quality of the building materials and techniques used.

The following day we rode our bikes to Salzburg. I was very dissapointed that Austrian guards did not stamp my passport.

Backroads no longer offers the Germany-Austria itinerary. It now has a Czech-Austria trip that starts out in Prague instead of Germany and it skips Salzburg. Prague was a lot of fun when I was there so I'm sure this is a great itinerary also.
