Big Sky, Montana
We flew to Bozeman, Montana and drove about 45 miles to Big Sky. Big sky has great expert skiing terrain, but there's not much there in terms of stores or restaurants. We had to drive all the way back to Bozeman a couple times for groceries.
In the post card picture, you can't see that there is a cable car that goes all the way to the top. The face of the mountain to the left is skiable when its open. It was usually closed in the morning when ski patrol sent mortor rounds to initiate avalanches.
I managed to get in only one run down that face. Most of the time I went down the backside which had a great long bump run. Big sky also had some really good narrow bump runs under lifts.
The picture doesn't show the face which is on the opposite side of the valley. You can hike up about 500 yards from a lift to get to some chutes. I started hiking up but it was slow going because there wasn't a good trail.
I was walking along and then I heard a voice: "sir.....sir". I turned around and there were three boarders wanting to get around me to get to the top.
I felt really old and really tired and decided it wasn't worth the effort and skied down from that spot.
